Turnip ( Nukal ) Dal -  Ingredients

Preparation Time :10 minutes  | Cooking Time : 20 minutes

  • Turnip ( Nookal , Nukal ) -1 number , diced
  • Toor dal - 1 cup
  • Tomato - 1 number , chopped
  • Turmeric powder-1 pinch
  • Hing - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste 
To Temper :

  • Oil -  1 teaspoon
  • Mustard -1/2 teaspoon
  • Urad dal- 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chilli - 2 number , slit
  • Onion - 1 number , chopped
  • Curry leaves - 1 spring ( Optional )

Method :

  • In a pressure cooker add the washed toor dal, Turmeric powder ,chopped tomatoes, chopped turnip, hing , some water and pressure cook the contents  for 10 minutes or  till the dal is cooked Soft .



  • In a Kadai, heat oil add the mustard seeds, urad dal ,  cumin seeds, chopped onions , slit red chilli , curry leaves ( optional )and  and cook till onions become soft.
  • Add the cooked dal to the tempered contents and bring the Dal Nukal ( Turnip ) to a boil .


  • Turnip Dal ( Nukal OR Nookal Paruppu )  is ready to be served
