Poli Recipe | How to make Puran Poli Step by Step pictures

This is one sweet that my mom makes often . This recipe is also made by my mom when I was in India , and I was only clicking pictures . Check out my Sweets recipes by clicking here .

Ingredients:
To Make the dough :
  • Maida / All purpose flour - 200 gms
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt - a pinch
  • Oil - 1 tbsp
To make the filling inside the dough :
  • Jaggery / Vellam - 200 gms
  • Channa Dal / Kadalai paruppu - 200gms
  • Cardamom pods - 3 pods , Crushed
For Frying:
  • Oil OR Ghee - Few drops

    Method:

    Pressure Cook the Channa dal  by adding some water for 2 hisses .  Drain the water  .


    Transfer the channa dal  to the mixer and grind it to a coarse paste . Set aside  .

    Mean while , Take a bowl , add the all purpose flour , turmeric powder , salt and add water and mix well to make a sticky dough. Apply oil generously and set aside for 2 hours .


    Take the jaggery in a cooking vessel , sprinkle some water and melt the jaggery . Add the cardamom pods to the jaggery .



    Transfer the ground coarse channa dal paste to the jaggery and mix well .


    Cook till they become a thick paste .



    Take a plastic paper or a butter paper , apply some oil in the paper . Take a small dough from the all purpose flour  and press it , add make a small ball of the jaggery paste for the filling  and place it on the dough .


    Cover the filling with the dough  and make a small ball shape .



    Press it gently with the hand to make a flat bread .


    Heat a iron pan , or a flat pan . Transfer the pressed poli to the pan and sprinkle some Oil or Ghee around the poli .


    Cook till it has brown spots and flip to the other side and cook similarly .


    Serve hot .

    Notes :

    • Wheat flour could be used to make the dough as well .
    • Grated coconut could be added when making the filling inside the dough .

    Ladoo Recipe | how to make boondi ladoo Step by step photos

    Ladoo Recipe
    Ladoo is a famous ancient traditional Indian recipe which is passed on to us by our predecessors . This Ladoo was made by by mom , when I visited India this summer .     Ingredients:

    To Make Boondhi :

    • Besan flour / GramFlour / Chickpea flour - 1 cup
    • Baking soda - 1 pinch
    • Water - As needed
    • oil - For Frying 
    To Make Sugar Syrup:


    •  Sugar - 1 1/2 cup
    • Water - 1/4 cup
    • Cardamom pods - 2 no , Crushed


      Method:

      In a Mixing Bowl add the Gram Flour ,  Baking soda , and Whisk . Now add the water and make it in to a batter without any lumps  like dosa Batter consistency ( Not too watery and  Not too thick )


      Heat oil in a Kadai , and take the Boondi making ladle and pour little batter on the ladle .


       

      The batter falls through the ladle hole in to the hot oil .




      Fry till the Boondi turns golden brown color .

       

      Drain on a paper towel and allow it to cool  a bit .


      Transfer this to the mixer and grind it to a coarse powder .


       In a heavy bottom pan add the sugar , crushed cardamon pods and add water so that the sugar is 
      completely immersed . Bring the sugar syrup to a boil till they come to " one String Consistency" .
      One String consistency is the thickness of the syrup must make one string between the thumb and index finger .


      Switch off once the one String consistency is reached , but still the sugar syrup should be warm when adding the boondi powder to it . Transfer the boondi powder to the sugar Syrup .


      Mix Well . Make small balls with the mixture and allow them to dry .





      Once dried , Store them in an airtight container and Use as desired .


      Yummy Boondi Laddo is ready to serve .

      Notes : 

      • The Boondi could be added to the sugar syrup directly without grinding in the mixer .

      Drumstick Leaves Fry | Murungai Keerai Poriyal

      During my childhood days this recipe comes in our menu at least once in 2 weeks. We had a drumstick tree growing in our backyard and we got to have this leaves frequently . Unfortunately I do not get Drumstick leaves in USA .  Check out the other poriyal recipes by clicking here .This recipe is made by my mom , when I visited India this summer . Off to the recipe now .

      Drumstick Leaves Fry | Murungai Keerai Poriyal

      Benefits of the  Drumstick Leaves : 

      These leaves are a great source of Iron and helps in controlling the glucose level .

      Ingredients:

      • Drumstick leaves1 bunch , Leaves removed from the stalk
      • Salt - To taste .
      • Grated Coconut - 1 table spoon ( optional )

      Tempering:

      • Oil - 1 tsp
      • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
      • Urad dhal - 1 tsp
      • Onion - 1 numbers  , chopped
      • Whole Red chilli- 2 numbers , slit

          Method:

          Remove the drumstick  leaves from the Stalk .

          Wash the leaves in water  .


          Heat a kadai , Add the oil , add the mustard seeds and allow to pop . Now add the urad dhal and fry till they become brown in color . Add red chills and onion and cook till the onion become translucent .

           

          Now add the drumstick leaves , and Salt . 


          Cook till the leaves become soft . Add the grated coconut ( Optional ) and give a quick stir . Yummy poriyal is ready .


          We had this poriyal with Rice , Sambar and Rasam

          Notes:
          • Cleaning the leave can be made easy by wrapping the  whole bunch in a plastic cover and refrigerate it . Next day the leaves would have fallen from the stalk 
          • Do not add the water while cooking the leaf , It gets the required water from the leaf as we have washed it before cooking .

          Apple Jam Recipe | Apple Jelly - Step by step pictures

          This is my first attempt to make jam at home . We went for Apple picking last week and our fruit basket is loaded with Apples . My daughter suggested that we should make jam and so we landed in this recipe . This is a easy recipe and kids will love it for sure .Off to the recipe now .

          Apple jam made with only 3 ingredients . Easy and simple

          Ingredients:

          • Apples - 1 kg 
          • Sugar - 700 gram
          • Pectin - 11 gram
          • Water - 1  1/2 cup

              Method:

              Peel out the skin of the apples .


              Chop the apples . Add them in a heavy bottom pan


              Add  water and bring the contents to a boil .


              Once the apples are cooked mash them well using a masher .


              Now add the pectin and mix .


              Add sugar and mix well . Bring the contents to a boil .



               Once the mixture starts to get thick and gets settled . switch it off .


              Yummy apple jam is ready !


              Store it in an air tight container and use . Refrigerate it for a longer shelf life

              Note:
              • If the apples are too sweet Sugar level could be reduced as per the taste and requirement .
              • This jam could be made with out pectin too . Pectin is optional and could be skipped if needed .
