PONNANGANNI KEERAI KOOTU | HOW TO MAKE SPINACH KOOTU RECIPE | SPINACH DAL

Ponnanganni Keerai is a tamil name of a spinach variety . The name Ponnanganni meaning Pon means Gold and this spinach Variety  is as precious as gold . The taste of Ponnangani keerai is really good and it is one of the best taste in the spinach Varieties . The English name of the Ponnanganni Keerai is Dwarf Copperleaf or Sessile Joyweed . So now of to today's post Ponnanganni Keerai Kootu Recipe .

Keerai Kootu - Ingredients 

Preparation Time : 10 minutes | Recipe Category: Curry
Cooking Time : 20 minutes | Recipe Cuisine : Indian

  • Moong dal - 1 cup
  • Tomatoes -1 number , chopped
  • Green chilli - 2 number , slit
  •  Salt - to taste
  • Turmeric powder - 1 pinch
  • Hing - 1/4 teaspoon
Tempering:

  • Oil- 2 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds  - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Urad dal - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili - 2 numbers
  • Ponnangani Keerai ( Spinach ) - 1/2 bunch , chopped
  • Onion - 1 number , chopped 
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon



    Method :

    • This is our Ponnangani Keerai Growing in our backyard .


    • Chop the stems of this Keerai ( Spinach ) using the scissors .


    • Separate the Leaves from the stem . Wash the leaves well to remove sand . Do not throw the stem . They can be used to make soups .

    • In a pressure cooker add the washed Moong dal, Turmeric Powder ,chopped tomatoes, slit green chilli, , water and pressure cook the contents for  for 10 minutes till the dal is cooked well.Add salt 



    •  In a Wok, heat oil add the mustard seeds allow it to pop ,add the  urad dal ,cumin seeds, chopped onions ,slit red chilli and  cook till onions become soft.Add the chopped Ponnangani Keerai ( Spinach )  leaves and stir for 2 minutes. Cook till leaves become soft .


    • Transfer this to the cooked dal , add water to desired consistency  and bring the contents to a boil . 


    • Poonangani Keerai Kootu is ready to serve . 


    Serve this Ponnangani Keerai kootu with steamed rice  rice,and flat breads .

    Lettuce Dal Fry | Romaine lettuce leaf Lentils Fry Recipe

    I usually buy lettuce to use it when i make sandwiches . We had some lettuce leaf left over at the refrigerator and I did not want to throw them out , so I thought of making this a combo with Lentils .  I made this similar to Spinach Dal Recipe .     Ingredients:

    • Toor dal - 1 cup
    • Tomatoes-1 no , chopped
    • Green chilli-2 nos
    •  Salt- to taste
    • Turmeric powder - 1 pinch

    Tempering:

    • Oil- 2 tsp
    • Mustard seeds  - 1/2 tsp
    • Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
    • Red chili - 2 no
    • Spinach -1/2 bunch chopped Or Frozen
    • Onion - 1 no , chopped 
    • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
    •  Romaine Leaf Lettuce -  As needed , Chopped


      Preparation:

      In a pressure cooker add the washed Toor dal, Turmeric Powder ,chopped tomatoes, slit green chilli, , water and pressure cook it for 10 mts till the dal is cooked well.Add salt and mix well .

        In a Kadai, heat oil add the mustard seeds allow it to pop ,add the  urad dal ,cumin seeds, chopped onions ,slit red chilli and  cook till onions become soft.Add the chopped lettuce leaves and stir for 2 minutes.


        Transfer this to the cooked dal , add water to desired consistency  and bring the contents to a boil .


        Serve hot with steamed rice  rice,and flat breads .

        Mixed Dhal Fry / Mixed Dal Tadka / Indian Lentil Soup / பருப்பு கடையல்

        Dhal is never a no to my family . We like all kinds of Dhal . My kids love to have dhal with Ghee . This Dhal fry is a mixed of three different dhals . Its one of the easiest and simplest Indian Dish . This has lot of proteins in it and it is very healthy .

        Mixed Dhal Fry / Mixed Dal Tadka / Indian Lentil Soup / பருப்பு கடையல்


        Ingredients:
        • Toor Dal - 1/2 cup
        • Moong Dal - 1/4 cup
        • Channa Dal - 1/4 cup
        • Green Chilli - 1 no , slit
        • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
        • Tomato - 1 no , chopped 
        • Salt - To taste
        • Hing - 1 pinch
        Tempering: 
        • Oil - 2 tsp
        • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
        • Urad dhal - 1/2 tsp
        • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
        • Red chilli - 2 no , slit
        • Onion - 1 no , chopped

        Method: 

        Wash the dhals in water .In a pressure cooker add the dhals , turmeric powder , green chilli , tomato , hing and pressure cook for 3 hisses .


        Add salt Mash them well .


        In a wok , heat oil add the mustard seeds and allow it to pop . Now add the urad dhal and allow it fry for few seconds . Add the cumin seeds and red chilli . Now add the onions and fry till they become translucent.


        Transfer these contents to the dhal and mix well .



        Serve hot with Steamed Rice , Roti , Paratha .

        BITTER GOURD DHAL ( DAL ) RECIPE | பருப்பு பாவற்காய்

        Bitter Gourd Dhal ( Dal ) is a simple and a easy recipe made with lentils and Bitter gourd and tempered with aromatic spices . This bitter Gourd Dhal ( Dal )  is best served with Steamed Rice and Rotis or Parathas . So now off to Today's post Bitter Gourd Dhal ( Dal ) Recipe .

        Ingredients:


          • Moong Dhal - 1/2 cup
          • Tomato - 1 no , diced
          • Green Chilli - 1 no , Slit
          • Turmeric Powder - 1 pinch
          • Hing - 1 pinch
          • Salt - to taste

          Tempering:

          • Oil - 1 tsp
          • Onion - 1 no , Chopped
          • Bitter Gourd - 1 no , Chopped
          • Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp

          Method:


          • In a pressure Cooker add the moong dhal , tomato , green chilli , turmeric powder , and hing and cook for 2 hisses .Set aside .


          • In a Frying pan , add oil , throw in mustard seeds and allow it to crackle , add the urad dhal and red chilli  and fry for few seconds .Add the onions and bitter gourd and salt .Cook till they turn soft .


          • Transfer these contents to the dhal and mix  . Allow these contents to boil for few minutes ,. Turn the Bitter gourd Dhal ( Dal ).

          • Done ! Yummy Bitter Gourd Dhal ( Dal ) is ready to serve .

          Cow Peas Curry / Black eye Beans Curry / Karamani Kara Kulambu / Karamani Puli Kulambu / காà®°ாமணி குà®´à®®்பு

          Cow Peas Curry / Karamani Kara Kulambu / Karamani Puli Kulambu

          Ingredients:

          • Cow peas / Karamani - 1/2 cup
          • Moong Dhal - 1/2 cup
          • Hing - 1 pinch
          • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp

          Tempering:


          • Oil - 2 tsp
          • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
          • Urad dhal - 1/2 tsp
          • Onion - 1 no , diced
          • Tomato - 1 no , diced
          • chopped Drum sticks  - 5 pieces
          • Tamarind juice - 1/2 cup
          • Salt - to taste
          • Sambar powder - 1 tbsp
          Cow Peas Curry / Black eye Beans Curry / Karamani Kara Kulambu / Karamani Puli Kulambu / காà®°ாமணி குà®´à®®்பு

          Method:

          In a pressure cooker dry roast the cow peas / Karamani to slight brown in colour .


          Add water , moong dhal , turmeric powder , hing .


          Cover with the lid and pressure cook for 4 hisses .


          In a kadai , add oil . Add the mustard seeds allow to pop . Add in the urad dhal and fry till it turns brown in color .


          Add in the onions and tomatoes , cook till it turns soft . Throw in the drum stick . Add the sambar masala , salt and mix.


          Pour the tamarind juice and bring the contents to boil .


          Transfer these contents to pressure cooked dhal and the karamani mixture and mix .


          Cover with the lid and pressure cook for 1 hisses . Serve hot.


          Enjoy this with roasted papad and hot piping rice .

          Dill Recipe / Dill Dhal Fry / Sombu Keerai Kootu / Dill Curry

          Ingredients:

          • Toor Dhal - 1 cup
          • Tomato - 1 no , chopped
          • Green Chilli - 1 no
          • Onion - 1 no , Chopped
          • Salt - to Taste
          • Hing - 1 pinch

          Tempering:

          • Oil - 1 tsp
          • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
          • Urad dhal -1 tsp
          • Dill Leaves - 1 bunch ,Cleaned and chopped

          Method:

          In a pressure cooker add the toor dhal , water , green chilli , tomato , hing and pressure cook for 2 hisses . Mash them well .


          In a kadai heat oil , add the mustard seeds and allow it to pop . Add the urad dhal and fry till it turns brown .


          Now add the chopped onions and fry till they become translucent . Add in the chopped dill leaves .


          Cook till the leaves become soft .


          Now add the cooked dhal to it and bring the contents to boil .


          Serve hot with steamed rice .

          Channa Dal Tadka / Channa dal Fry / Kadalai paruppu kulambu

          Channa Dal Tadka / Channa dal Fry / Kadalai paruppu kulambu


          Ingredients:

          Channa dal - 3/4 cup
          Moong dal - 1/4 cup
          Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
          Green chilli - 2 no , slit
          Tomato - 1 no , chopped
          Hing - 1/4 tsp
          Lemon juice - 1 tsp
          Salt - to taste

          Tempering

          Red chilli - 1 no
          Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
          Kasthoori Methi powder - 1 tsp
          Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
          Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
          Oil - 2 tsp 

           Procedure:

           In a pressure cooker add the channa dal , moong dal , turmeric powder , green chilli , tomato , hing and pressure cook for 4 whistles .


          Open the pressure cooker add the lime juice ,salt  and mash the pressure cooked dal .


          In a shallow pan , heat oil , add the mustard seeds , allow it to pop , add the cumin seeds , urad dal , red chilli and kasthoori methi powder and fry them. Transfer these contents to the cooked dal .


           Serve hot with steamed rice and rotis .

          Radish Leaf Curry / Mullangi Elai Kootu

          Radish Leaves Curry / Mullangi Elai Kootu


          Ingredients:

          Moong dhal - 1 cup
          Onion - 1 no , chopped,
          Tomato - 1 no , chopped
          Green chilli - 2 no, slit
          Garlic pods -  2 no , crushed
          Salt - to taste
          Radish leaves - a bunch, chopped.
          Turmeric powder - 1 pinch
          Hing - 1 pinch
          Water - 2 cups

          Tempering:

          Oil - 1 tsp
          Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
          Urad dhal - 1/2 tsp
          Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
          Red chilli - 1 no

          Procedure:

          I want to farmers market last week and saw these fresh radish bunch . After I came home, I cleaned the radish and  freezed the leaves.


          In a pressure cooker , add the washed moong dal , tomato , onion , green chilli , garlic pods , 2 cups water, turmeric powder , hing and pressure cook for 2 whistles .


          In a shallow pan , heat oil , add the mustard seeds and allow it to Pop.Add the cumin seeds and urad dhal .
          Now add the chopped radish leaves and cook till leaves become soft . 
           

          Transfer this cooked leaf to the pressure cooked dhal


          Add salt , Mash it well , and bring it to boil.Cook for 5 minutes and put off the flame.


          Serve hot with steamed rice .
